The Chicago Cubs dropped another home game and this time to the Texas Rangers by a score of 4-2. However, the Cubs fought until the end and almost made a very nice comeback in the 9th inning. The Cubs were down to their final out of the game and that’s when the sparks came alive. Starlin Castro started the rally with a single, Anthony Rizzo walked and Alfonso Soriano hit an infield single. The bases were loaded for Nate Schierholtz and he delivered with a 2-run double. Now the score is 4-2 with the tying run at 2nd base with Welington Castillo at the plate. But Rangers’ closer Joe Nathan hit Castillo. Darwin Barney came to the plate with 2 outs and bases loaded and the winning run at 1st base. Barney made good contact, but the Rangers CF Craig Gentry made a nice catch to the end the game. The Cubs dropped to 5 games under .500 with a record of 4-9.
Winning pitcher: Derek Holland (1-1)
Losing pitcher: Travis Wood (1-1)
Save: Joe Nathan (5)
The good: The Cubs did not give up when they could have easily given up the fight. That’s good to see when your team isn’t winning. A lot of time when your team keeps losing, you just don’t want to finish the game and want the game to end as soon as possible.
The bad: The Cubs still can’t beat a left-handed pitcher and the all righty line-up isn’t working. The Cubs are now 0-4 vs. LHP. Two players that strictly plays vs. LHP and are supposed to be a lefty killer are doing nothing. Dave Sappelt is hitting .053 and Scott Hairston is hitting .071.
The ugly: Shawn Camp! He’s not the same pitcher he was last year and has struggled in his last 2 outings. He blew the save on Sunday and got the lost as well giving up 4 earned runs. And today Camp game up a couple runs and threw the ball away on a pick-off attempt. Don’t be surprised if Camp is DFA at some point in the near future is he keeps pitching like the way he is.
Today the Cubs will be back to action at 7:05 p.m. central vs. the Rangers. Carlos Villanueva will go for the Cubs and Justin Grimm for the Rangers. You can see the game in WGN and heard on WGN 720.
