The IceHogs returned on Tuesday night to host their rivals, the Milwaukee Admirals. Despite recent poor performances by the IceHogs at home, this game was surprisingly good. The team was present and accounted for. Hard fought, well thought out plays, digging down deep for the grit needed to play the game.
Despite their great performance Tuesday, it just wasn’t enough. The game consists of 3 – 20 minute periods and must be played for the entire 60 minutes. The IceHogs seem to have a habit of coasting through the 2nd frame of every game, no matter what’s up on the scoreboard. The outcome is usually never good. That night, Milwaukee boarded their bus with the Win, 4-3.
Netminder, Jeff Glass, seemed to have a problem with his spatial reasoning during the game. Very often, he was way out of place and not able to recover that deficit during crucial times of the game. Milwaukee capitalized on that problem, scoring easily while he scrambled. The OT goal by Milwaukee is a perfect example of that problem. He knew it too, smacking the glass hard with his stick, as he exited the ice after the game. On a positive note, the IceHogs’ Defense, as a whole, did show improvement despite the loss.
Fans cheered on a fight that occurred near the end of the 2nd period. Chris DeSousa and Mike Liambas went toe to toe. Liambas won the dance, after delivering a hard hit to side of DeSousa’s head. Liambas played for the IceHogs last season and still is remembered fondly by the fans. Staged fight between friends? Who knows. But none the less, that was a very real, solid hit, that leveled DeSousa.
Forward, Vinnie Hinostroza, had a outstanding night, scoring 2 goals for Rockford. He was named the 3rd Star of the Game. Number 1 & 2 Stars of the Game went to Milwaukee’s Matt White and Pontus Aberg, respectively.
The Hogs hit the road with back-to-back games this coming weekend up in Manitoba against the Moose. They don’t return home until March 25th. A total of 5 home games remain in the IceHogs’ regular season schedule.
