The Chicago Bears search for a new head coach officially began on Wednesday as the team began conducting interviews to fill their vacancy.
The team is believed to be targeting an offensive coach to mentor quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. One of the candidates is current New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr.
Many believe the Bears are interested in him due to general manager Ryan Pace’s ties to the Saints, but also because of his record for being apart of one of the most consistent offensives in all of football over the last decade.
Take a look at how the Saints’ offense has ranked offensively since 2006. Carmichael Jr. took over as OC in 2009 after being QB coach since 2006:
The Saints finished 2017 ranked No. 2 in total offense (391.2 yards per game). Here’s where the Saints have ranked offensively in the 12 years of Sean Payton-Drew Brees era:
2017: 2
2016: 1
2015: 2
2014: 1
2013: 4
2012: 2
2011: 1
2010: 6
2009: 1
2008: 1
2007: 4
2006: 1— Jeff Duncan (@JeffDuncan_) January 2, 2018
Since 2006, the Saints have finished top five in total offense in the NFL all but once. They have ranked number one in total offense six times over that span.
Carmichael Jr. has seen the team finish either first or second in total offense six of his eight years. He, along with quarterback Drew Brees and head coach Sean Payton, has been consistently great over that time.
It is Carmichael Jr.’s work this year with the offense that has a hot commodity for head coaching openings as the Saints finished with the best offense in football this year.
The team had offensive skill players Brees, running back Alvin Kamara, and wide receiver Michael Thomas all named to the Pro-Bowl this season.
The offense also finished in the top five for rushing offense this season which was an improve from 16th last season.
The Saints offensive success is a big selling point for Carmichael Jr and for general manager Ryan Pace. With a Bears team that has consistently lack offense over the past decade, Carmichael Jr. could be an ideal fit. The success of Brees and now the Saints rushing offense makes him just more of an intriguing candidate to watch.
