Some changes are coming to both the North and South Side of Chicago.
Major League Baseball announced on Thursday morning that protective netting will be installed at all 30 stadiums ahead of the 2018 season. The announcement states that each club has agreed to install protective netting to at least the far ends of both dugouts. Some will be installed further.
“Providing baseball fans with a variety of seating options when they come to the ballpark, including seats behind protective netting, is important,” said MLB Commissioner Robert D. Manfred. “Major League Clubs are constantly evaluating the coverage and design of their ballpark netting and I am pleased that they are providing fans an increased inventory of protected seats.”
There have been multiple injuries to fans at stadiums over the years, creating a concern and calling for protective netting at ballparks.
Some ballparks agreed in 2017 to add protective netting and just recently the majority of teams also agreed. All but three teams, the Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics and Arizona Diamondbacks, had agreed to add the netting. That all changed on Thursday morning with Manfred stating all 30 teams will extend the netting.
It is unknown how far Wrigley Field or Guaranteed Rate will extend the netting.
