The MLB All-Star break is just a week away as players will get a few days off to rest and prepare for the long second half of the season and a pennant race in both leagues. But for a few Chicago Cubs players, there won’t be much rest.
Just a few days after it was announced that Javier Baez, Willson Contreras and Jon Lester were named to the NL team for the annual All-Star Game, at least one of them will be in another event. Chicago Sun-Times beat writer Gordon Wittenmyer is reporting that both Baez and teammate Kyle Schwarber will participate in the Home Run Derby on Monday night.
Wittenmyer sourced several team insiders in his report:
Second baseman Javy Baez and left fielder Kyle Schwarber, who entered Tuesday night’s game tied for the Cubs’ lead with 17 homers each, make up half the National League field for Monday’s Home Run Derby, according to several team insiders.
The duo will make up half of the NL field, joining Bryce Harper of the Nationals and Max Muncy of the Dodgers. The official 8-player field hasn’t been announced yet, it’s expected to be released in the coming days.
Baez has 17 home runs so far this season which is 6 off his career-high of 23. He’s put together an impressive first half so far, helping the Cubs get to 51-37. Meanwhile, the left-handed Schwarber also has 17 home runs on the season and is 13 shy of his career-high of 30 he hit back in 2017.
