The talk surrounding Yu Darvish is starting to heat up.
On Monday it was reported that the Milwaukee Brewers offered a contract to the free agent pitcher, hoping they could land him and improve their chances at winning the NL Central next year. But honors later something interesting happened.
The Chicago Cubs signed catcher Chris Gimenez to a minor league deal. Gimenez spent time with the Texas Rangers, serving as Darvish’s personal catcher. Hmmmm…
But the biggest news came later Monday night from the New York Times, citing the Associated Press on a condition of anonymity. Here’s what the NYT wrote:
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday night because there was no agreement in place. The Texas Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees also have expressed interest in signing the Japanese pitcher.
The Cubs have been in pursuit of Darvish for over a month now but haven’t been able to come to an agreement after meeting in Dallas. Darvish wants a deal in the range of six years but it’s possible he could eventually sign a four or five year deal.
There’s no agreement in place but it’s certainly a good thing that the Cubs are in talks with Darvish again. Now can they get an agreement done before one of the other teams makes the splash?
