The rumors have been swirling about the Cubs fielding offers for starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija as the team appears ready to trade him. But a new report out today from Gordon Wittenmyer suggests the Cubs have different plans for the pitcher.
Wittenmyer reports the Cubs have began talks with Samardzija about a multiyear extension. The reported offer from the Cubs is five-years and a higher offer than the previous offer of $60 million. The Cubs and Samardzija have been far apart for a few years now, so this might be one final push for the Cubs to try and keep him.
Samardzija is having his best season as a Cubs pitcher posting the best ERA in baseball through May. It’s at 2.77 entering his start tonight in Miami. But even with that the rumors swirled about the team wanting to trade him. Now its possible that the idea may have changed.
Will Samardzija decide to stay in Chicago after years of losing and not getting a deal done? Have the Cubs annoyed him with trade talks over the years? Both are possible, but at least the Cubs are trying to keep their best starting pitcher.
