The Chicago Cubs may not be done making some moves to improve their team as they push for the playoffs.
According to a report by Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago, the Cubs and Detroit Tigers have remained engaged in talks revolving starter Justin Verlander.
Levine reported the news on Wednesday, just a day before the MLB waiver trade deadline on Thursday.
Here’s what Levine writes on the situation:
The Cubs and Tigers are both continuing to evaluate minor league players who could be part of a potential deal, now or later, sources said. The Cubs have traded much of their top-tier talent in their farm system in the past year-plus, but there are young pitchers in Chicago’s system at Class-A and Double-A who interest Detroit.
The Cubs and Tigers were reportedly engaged in talks ahead of the non-waiver deadline back at the end of July but couldn’t get a deal done. While Detroit discussed Verlander with other teams, it appears as if no team wanted to pay the rest of his contract.
Now Chicago could be looking to add another starter for the playoff run, with Friday’s playoff roster eligibility deadline.
Verlander is is 9-8 on the season with a 3.90 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 167 innings pitched.
Chicago could also re-engage in talks this November as both Jake Arrieta and John Lackey are set to hit the free agent market.
As for Thursday’s deadline, we will just have to wait and see.
