The 24-year-old Contreras is one of the best prospects in baseball and ranked No. 2 behind Gleyber Torres in the Cubs farm system. He was ranked as high as No. 27 on Keith Law’s prospect rankings going into 2016.
Contreras was tearing up pitching down in Triple-A Iowa, slashing .350/.439/.591 with 9 home runs and 16 doubles this season. With the Cubs needing some help behind the dish, it makes sense to call up the prospect now. He is set to be the third catcher and will make occasional starts for the team.
The Cubs will open a home stand of six games in six days, beginning with three against the Pittsburgh Pirates starting on Friday.
