The MLB hot stove is starting to heat up as the Winter Meetings have begun in Nashville.
The latest rumor from the meetings surfaced Monday when it was reported that the Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays have discussed a deal for infielder Javier Baez. With the Cubs stacked on infield prospects, letting Baez go for a pitcher is the ideal thought behind the deal.
Report Bruce Levine reported that Jake McGee could be the return in the deal. The lefty reliever would fit in well in the Cubs bullpen as he posted a 2.41 ERA, 48 strikeouts and a WHIP of 0.94 last season.
Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times also reported that the Rays are targeting the 23-year-old Baez in some sort of deal:
The Rays have pitching depth to deal from – either of their two late-inning relievers, Jake McGee or Brad Boxberger, and a starter from the group of Drew Smyly, Matt Moore, Jake Odorizzi and Erasmo Ramirez.
There is no confirmation of any deal, or a clear sense of how far along they are or likely to reach agreement.
