The deal is a record amount for a pitcher for a second-time arbitration pitcher. The 30-year-old Arrieta had a break out season last year with the Cubs, winning the NL Cy Young award after a dominant second half. His pitching helped the Cubs reach the NLCS for the first time since 2003.
Arrieta finished the season 22-6 with a 1.73 ERA. It’s expected that the Cubs and Arrieta will reach a long-term deal in the near future.
