The Cubs will once again be sellers at this years trade deadline and we all know the one name that is popping up in those rumors. But another name has also been discussed, and it’s another starting pitcher.
Multiple reports out today are indicating the Cubs have already discussed trade offers for both Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel. Reports from newspapers and beat writers surfaced today and I expect the talk to heat up as the trade deadline approaches.
Among those teams interested and mentioned in the reports:
- Toronto Blue Jays
- Atlanta Braves
- Seattle Mariners
- Cincinnati Reds
- Boston Red Sox
- Baltimore Orioles
All of those teams are looking to booster their rotation in hopes of a deep postseason run.
Gordon Wittenmyer reports that the Blue Jays, Braves and Mariners are among the most interested. CSN’s Patrick Mooney also states those teams are in on Samardzija. Early reports have also mentioned the Orioles in on at least Samardzija.
As for the Red Sox, they have had scouts in attendance to view the Cubs but it’s hard to find out what need they are trying to fill.
Hammel has been a surprise for the Cubs this season and it could lead them to acquiring young pitching if they get the right deal. Hammel could be a good rent option for a playoff team. One source from Wittenmyer claims he fully expects Hammel to end up with the Mariners.
