After what’s been a disappointing and underachieving 2011 campaign for the Chicago White Sox, it seemingly comes down to the next two weeks of baseball.
The next 12 games see the Sox facing division-leading Detroit, AL East powers Boston and New York and pesky Minnesota.
If the Sox want to show not only themselves but all of baseball that they’re serious about playing October baseball, now is the time to do it.
The second half of the baseball season has been somewhat positive for the Sox thus far. Starting by taking 2 of 3 from the Tigers in Detroit before sputtering in Kansas City and sweeping the Indians in a rain-shortened two game series. Currently the Sox sit 4.5 games out of first behind Detroit with a three game series staring them right in the eyes.
A sweep might be just the boost this team needs to finally take control of the division, but that’s been said many times this year. However, there’s no bigger series than this one that starts tonight on the south side.
With players like Dunn and Rios having dismally sub-par years, it’s hard to fathom this team being this close going into August. Paul Konerko and Carlos Quentin have been the catalysts of a weak offensive product all year long. If this team wants to get serious, someone else is going to have to step up. Who wants that role? That remains to be seen. With just about two months left in the season, there’s no more time to look down the schedule and think that you can put a run together, NOW is the time to do it.
With 9 of the next 12 against playoff teams as of today, there is no margin for error for these Sox. It has come down to this.
For a team that considered themselves “All In” before the season, they’ve folded numerous times this season and the chips are running low on their end of the table.
The time is now for the boys in black. It’s your choice, fellas. Rise? Or fall?
