Win: Kevin Gregg (2-0) Loss: Robert Coello (2-2)
Home Runs: CHC: Cody Ransom (5) LAA: Howie Kendrick (8), Mark Trumbo 2(15)
The Good: Anthony Rizzo hit a bases clearing three run double in the Top of the 10th off of Robert Coello. The Cubs offense was rolling today, with Cody Ransom hitting a three run home run in the fifth. Ryan Sweeney got a start in Center Field, where he collected two hits, including a triple, and made a diving catch in the seventh inning to save a run. Alfonso Soriano hit two doubles and Cody Ransom and Starlin Castro added one double apiece. Kevin Gregg allowed a run in 1.1 innings but got the win and got out of a jam in the bottom of the 10th.
The Bad: Starting Pitcher Matt Garza was good, but not great. He allowed four runs over 6.1 innings, surrendering seven hits, but did keep his team in the game, and out-pitched his counterpart Jason Vargas. James Russell allowed a game tying home run to Mark Trumbo in the bottom of the 8th. It was Trumbo’s first home run of the game at the time. Scott Hairston went 0-2 with two strikeouts, and was later replaced with Nate Schierholtz.
The Ugly: Despite some rough pitching, there was nothing that would qualify as ugly in this game.
The Stat: Ryan Sweeney has gotten off to a good start with the Cubs, hitting .357.
Notes: While the Cubs have an off day tomorrow, there will be some action as the MLB Draft is tomorrow. The Cubs pick 2nd and are highly considering the big names such as Mark Appel, Jonathan Gray and Kris Bryant. Keep it here for all of the Cubs draft coverage.
