We heard earlier that the Cubs added SS Junior Lake to the 40-man roster. Here’s more moves to the 40-man roster:
The Cubs added LHP Jeff Beliveau, IF Junior Lake IF Josh Vitters, and OF Matt Szczur to the 40-man roster. Beliveau is coming to his own and is looking like a good lefty. Lake has been a late bloomer and earned a spot. All I can say is watch out for this kid. Many Cub people still have faith in Vitters and hope this former 1st round pick pans out. I’m one who still has faith in this kid and he’s still a kid. Finally, Szczur was an obvious choice to be added. He’s the 3rd best prospect according to Baseball America. The Cubs made the right decisions on the additions to the 40-man roster.
With players being added, there had to be subtractions… RHP Esmailin Caridad, RHP Kyle Smit and OF Lou Montañez were removed from the 40-man roster. Caridad fell off the earth and don’t really know what happen to him. Smit has not produced to the performace that earned him a spot on the 40-man roster. Montanez was an easy choice to be removed as he was just depth for the 2011 season.
Right now, the Cubs 40-man roster stands at 34. The Cubs have 6 spots over for trades, free agents and/or more players being added to the 40-man roster. For the most part, teams just add players to the 40-man roster, so they are protected from the Rule V draft that is held at the Winter Meetings in the beginning of December.
