The San Jose Sharks knock off the Chicago Blackhawks by a final score of 5-3. Blackhawks losing streak now extended to 7 games.
It didn’t take long for the scoring to open up. Michael Frolik was guilty of committing a high-sticking penalty just 58 seconds into the first period, and exactly one minute later, Justin Braun made the Blackhawks pay blasting home just his second goal of the season.
Several minutes later, a goaltender interference call on Patrick Marleau erased what would have been San Jose’s second goal of the game.
Then things started to intensify between the two teams. Joe Thornton gave Jonathan Toews a nice whack as they were both heading to their respective benches. Toews didn’t like it, turned around and let Thornton know about it, and it ultimately led to a big scrap in between the two benches.
San Jose somehow ended up receiving a power play after the scuffle, and the Sharks capitalized with Dan Boyle taking advantage of a juicy rebound from Corey Crawford giving them a 2-0 lead.
But, Chicago came out firing in the second period. Marcus Kruger scored 2 goals in a span of exactly 3 minutes to tie the game at 2 mid-way through the 2nd period.
With a little over 4 minutes to go in the period, a turnover by Duncan Keith led to a Sharks 2-on-1 opportunity. San Jose couldn’t convert on the initial opportunity, but on the second, Dylan Olsen accidentally swatted in Joe Thornton’s pass that was centered to give the Sharks a one-goal lead again.
Chicago outshot San Jose 17-3 in the second period.
Early in the third period, Bryan Bickell notched his 5th goal of the season that tied the game at 3, but that only sat for a good 3:25 until Benn Ferriero found himself in the crease with an empty net and buried it to put the Sharks up 4-3.
Jamie McGinn sealed the deal with San Jose’s third power play goal of the game with less than 6 minutes to go in the final period, and that’s how it ended.
