The Chicago Cubs last won a World Series in 2016, but the core that led them to that glory was broken a few years later. Fast forward to the present, which is nine years later, could a reunion with one of those former members make sense in 2025?
Here, we take a further look.
Should the Chicago Cubs reunite with a 2016 World Series winner?
Beloved and fan-favorite Anthony Rizzo is currently a free agent. The now 35-year-old was traded to the New York Yankees in 2021. His last two seasons have been marred by injuries, as a concussion in 2023 limited him to 99 games, and a forearm fracture in 2024 kept him to just 92 games. It’s possible that he still has something left in the tank, making him an intriguing depth option for the Cubs to consider for the 2025 season
What kind of depth would Anthony Rizzo provide for the Chicago Cubs in 2025?
Michael Bush is currently the Cubs first baseman of the future, but with Cody Bellinger gone, there is not a clear backup at the position. Recently acquired Vidal Brujan does have experience there, but adding someone like Rizzo may be more valuable due to his familiarity with the position. Rizzo also has more upside offensively and could be utilized as a pinch hitter late in games if needed.
What kind of contract would Anthony Rizzo receive in 2025?
At this point in Rizzo’s career, he is unlikely to receive a multi-year contract. It’s possible that a MLB deal may not even be on the table if his free agency lingers on closer to spring training. He may have to settle for a minor league deal and earn his way onto a big league roster. Regardless, Rizzo’s services should be acquired for a bargain and it wouldn’t cost the Cubs much to take a flier on reuniting with him.
