Three Stars-Pirates
3rd Star-Andrew McCutchen– On the day he made the NL All Star team, McCutchen delivered two singles for the Pirates to put his average over .300.
2nd Star-Starling Marte- Some viewed Marte as a snub from the All Star Game, and he proved why, singling twice and stealing two bases to give him 27 on the season.
1st Star- Pedro Alvarez- Alvarez earned his first All Star Game nod today, and hit his team leading 22nd home run that gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead at the time.
Game Notes: Neil Walker suffered an injury and left the game in the 5th inning.
Starter Charlie Morton surrendered four earned runs over six innings.
Justin Wilson and Bryan Morris threw scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Alvarez, Marte and McCutchen were the only Pirates who had hits.
Three Stars- Cubs
3rd Star- Luis Valbuena- He made a web gem at third and added two singles and a walk.
2nd Star- Edwin Jackson- This hasn’t been said too often this season, but Jackson pitched a great game. He allowed only one run over 5.2 innings and fanned three.
1st Star- Alfonso Soriano- With two long balls today, Soriano is now tied with Anthony Rizzo for the team lead. He drove in all four Cubs runs today.
Game Notes: Kevin Gregg notched his 15th save.
Matt Guerrier threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Welington Castillo went 2-2 with a double.
Additional Notes:
Travis Wood will represent the Cubs in New York for the All Star Game on July 16.
Javier Baez went 1-4 with a home run in his Double A debut.
Tomorrow’s game will start at 1:20. A.J. Burnett is on the hill for the Pirates, while Carlos Villanueva returns to the Cubs rotation. Dale Sveum said that tomorrow may be a bullpen day.
