The White Sox stepped up again this afternoon following suit of their veteran 43-year-old third baseman. Omar Vizquel started the game off in exciting fashion with a long ball to right field on a 3-2 count that put the Sox ahead of Detroit 1-0 with one out in the first.
Omar who hasn’t hit a home run since August of 2009 was greeted in the dugout by Mark Kotsay- who knows what it feels like to have an dismal 2010 season with brief fleeting moments of excitement. After showing off his guns to the camera crew it was back to business on the Southside.
A few strikeouts and softly hit groundouts were the story of the next few innings as John Danks powered threw, babysitting his team’s 1-0 lead until the 6th inning when a successful suicide squeeze put the Sox ahead of Detroit 2-0. That my friends, was a great way to see the team score a run– and with Beckham and Vizquel no less!
Sergio Santos replaced Danks at the Top of the 8th and after a 30 pitch inning and a lot of hand-wringing finally danced his way out of the inning on a wicked strike out of Miguel Cabrera.
AJ Pierzynski showed that he can step up to the plate now and again by starting the Bottom of the 8th out with a long fly ball to right field and his 3rd home run of the year. Don’t count AJ out before his 10/5 starts- if he’s going to get traded he’s going to make sure he makes as much noise at US Ceullular as possible beforehand!
Big Bad Bobby Jenks who is just mostly just “bad” Bobby Jenks lately, took over in the 9th and chose to make this outing a little less interesting for those of us sitting at home than he has been. No heart attacks today- Jenks struck out Brennan Boesch, and forced Guillen and Laird into ground outs while sandwiching a single by Brandon Inge in between the two plays to end the game.
Sox win 3-0.
Let’s just keep our fingers crossed that we can go in with an easy sweep of the Cubs and power on to Pittsburgh and Washington for a 8 game road trip later this upcoming week.
I only have one question for the Sox going into this series up at Wrigley. Will the starting pitching we were expecting this off-season please show up?
