The opening game was a 14 inning marathon that ended in a Sox loss, the second game John Danks left with an injury and the Sox ended their 17 consecutive series victories vs. NL teams; bad series. The Sox again missed opportunity after opportunity and this time it bit them in the ass as they dropped the first and third games with decisions of 9-5 and 2-1, respectively and won the middle game 3-0.
The pitching was what kept the Sox in the games, but this after a while its not going to be enough. Edwin Jackson opened the series with 7 innings of shutout baseball striking out 8, against his former team. The Middle game was started by John Danks but he was only able to go 1.2 innings. The story was Jake Peavy. Peavy pitched in his first relief appearance and made it count going 4 innings striking out 7 and surrendering only 1 hit and 0 walks. The honorable mention was Brian Bruney who went 2.1 innings walking one and giving up 1 hit to bridge the gap between Danks and Peavy. The rubber match was an excellent pitching performance by Phil Humber, who earned the loss going 6.2 surrendering 2 ER on 3 hits. But the offense was unable to back his strong outing.
The hitting again was unable to capitalize on opportunities, the story of 2011. The Sox as a team was 4/26 with RISP and left 32 on base over the series. Morel was 4/11 in the series, hitting in the 2 hole. Pierzynski was 4/9 with a big homer in game 1. Adam Dunn was 2/14 against the Nats and Gordon Beckham was 1/9
