The Bears added to the potential log jam at linebacker today with the signing of Sam Acho. Acho was drafted out of Texas in 2011, and has played for the Arizona Cardinals the last four seasons. He played defensive end in college, and converted to a 3-4 outside linebacker at the pro level.
This move brings up a question about the number of players at this position on the roster: Do we have too many linebackers? The answer is simple. No. This is a new regime. This is a new scheme. And no one knows what the Bears really have in all of these players. The competition between all of them is only going to enhance the top end of the roster. Fangio and Fox will be able to flush out the best talent, and most likely discard the rest. More talent allows for more options in rotation.
Acho was a very good pass rusher at Texas, and screamed onto the NFL scene with a seven sack rookie season. Injuries and coaching changes have derailed him a bit, but he is still only 26 years old with a good amount of upside. Over the last four seasons, he has also been very strong against the run. That seems to be a trend with a large amount of the Bears offseason signings, which is a very good thing given the run defense the last two seasons.
The depth chart is steadily growing with talented players under the age of 27. And that will only improve once the draft is upon us and the new wave of talent comes to town to help change the face of the Chicago Bears.
