The Chicago Cubs made a minor surprise in the 1st round by going with 3B Kris Bryant. Manly because the Cubs have been linked to starting pitching all year long and that’s where their depth lacks in the minors. However, the Cubs went with the best player available and took Bryant. Many believe he was the best player in the draft and will contribute to the majors at some point. The Cubs took another surprise in the draft by selecting Missouri left-hand pitcher Rob Zastrynzy in the 2nd round, 41st overall. However, Zastrynyz may have not been a reached … he opened a lot of scouts eyes in the SEC touranment and raised his draft stock.
Kendall Rodgers has covered college baseball for over 10 years for Perfect Game USA said the Cubs selecting Zastrynzy was a heck of a picked. He opened eyes at the SEC Touranment and was topping his fastball at 95.
Per reports, Zastrynzy velocity was in the 80’s all season long and what he was judged on. If he does throw in the mid 90’s now, the pick would not be a reached and a great pick.
For Missouri this season, Zastrynyz was 2-9 with a 3.38 era in 90.2 innings. Zastrynyz has a great walk to strikeout ratio and that’s a player the Cubs need … he walked 24 batters and struck out 82 batters. That’s why win/lost record doesn’t matter and SHOULD NOT be looked at.

Yesterday concluded the first 2 rounds of the 2013 MLB draft. Look for the Cubs to draft mostly pitchers from here on out, especially through the earlier rounds. Today teams will draft more players in rounds 3-10. Let’s hope we’ll see more players drafted by the Cubs of whom we will see at Wrigley in the near future.
