The Chicago White Sox add to their catching depth by bringing home a former All-Star on a minor league deal.
The Chicago White Sox added to their depth once more with signing veteran catcher and former All-Star Omar Narvaez to a minor league deal per FanSided’s Robert Murray.
A disastrous 2024 season
The 32-year-old Narvaez made his Major League Debut for the Chicago White Sox back on July 17th, 2016, where he went 1-3 against the Los Angeles Angels. Spending three seasons with the Chicago White Sox, proved to be a valuable player with having a career line of .274/.366/.379 for an OPS and OPS+ of .745 and 106. Narvaez White Sox career came to a close when he was Traded by the Chicago White Sox to the Seattle Mariners for Alex Colomé.
Narvaez had a disastrous season for the New York Mets for the 2024 season in which led to him being released back in November. In just 28 games for the Mets Narvaez hit .154/.191/.185 for an OPS and OPS+ of .376 and 9. As well as being poor with his offense Narvaez carried it over with his defense with allowing 33 out of 35 base runners to successfully steal against him. Needless to say, that Narvaez was one of the worst players in the majors last season even with such a small sample size. Which is why it makes sense he comes back home to the worst team in Major League Baseball history.
The home coming for Narvaez
Signing the former All-Star to a minor league deal provides the Chicago White Sox a lot of depth and experience at the catching position. Omar Narvaez could compete for the backup catching position with fellow veteran catcher Matt Thaiss who the White Sox got in a trade with the Cubs for cash considerations. Narvaez will also be competing with Korey Lee who figures to be the White Sox starting catcher come Opening Day. Starting the year at Triple-A for next season, unless he tears it up during spring training, Omar Narvaez will provide valuable veteran experience to catching prospects Kyle Teel and Edgar Quero and help in their development at defensive catchers.
