The Chicago White Sox have two interesting prospects who figure to be a future for them at the catching position and could figure to shine in 2025.
The Chicago White Sox have a nice group of young prospects that fans should be excited to see in the next couple years as some of them start to make their debut. A couple of prospects that fans should keep their eyes on who could figure to have an impact for the Chicago White Sox at the catching position are number two overall prospect Kyle Teel and number six overall prospect Edgar Quero.
Kyle Teel (No. 2 overall, MLB No. 25 overall)
The 23-year-old Teel was acquired in the trade in which the Chicago White Sox sent the Boston Red Sox got lefty Garrett Crochet and they sent back Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth, and Wilkeman Gonzalez. When looking at how Kyle Teel grades out of his tools in the grades that MLB gave to who, who grade on a scale from 20-80 with 80 being the best grade a player can receive. Teel’s best quality he has going for him is his arm which grades out at 65/80. Other notable grades to point out are his hit ability which is at a 55/80 and he is graded at a 50/80 for his run.
With only being drafted a year and a half ago Teel has had very little time down on the farm to rack up stats, but in his short time on the farm he didn’t fail to impress. So far in his two seasons for his minor league career Teel has a slash line of .301/.404/.444 with an OPS of .848.
For Teel in 2024 he showed that he was better with the bat than what his grades had him pegged for. In in 112 games played which he split his time between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worchester Teel had 123 hits, 23 doubles, 13 HRs, 78 RBI, 12 stolen bases only being caught 5 times, for a slash line of .288/.386/.433 for an OPS of .819.
Currently the Chicago White Sox have Korey Lee as their starter, but Kyle Teel may give him so competition during spring training with Teel saying he should be in big-league spring training camp this season. Lee for his part with the White Sox last year in 125 games Lee only managed to hit .210/.244/.347 and an OPS of .591. Still just 26-years-old Lee could turn it around at the plate and with him showing the ability to play other positions during his time in the minor leagues, the White Sox could figure to move him somewhere else in favor of Teel behind the plate.
Edgar Quero (No. 6 overall, MLB No. 59)
A switch-hitting catcher who was acquired in the Lucas Giolito deal, Edgar Quero since coming over to the Chicago White Sox has been great with 2024 being no exception. In 98 games Quero had 98 hits, 16 doubles, 16 HRs, 70 RBI, for a slash line of .280/.366/.463 and an OPS of .829.
Quero’s bat will play whenever he is called up to the major leagues there’s just a question as to will he become a capable receiver of the baseball to match with his bat? Edgar Quero will most likely be starting his season down in Triple-A given that both Korey Lee and Kyle Teel rank ahead of him on the depth chart. Quero also figures to start the season down on the farm so he can get consistent every day at-bats and work on becoming a better receiver.
The future is bright
With the 2025 season fast approaching and spring training being even closer things are starting to get exciting if you’re a Chicago White Sox fan and are looking to see what all these young talented prospects will bring to the team. Kyle Teel is all things go well should be on the Opening Day roster given he doesn’t really have that much more to prove other than can he step up to the challenge and be able to take on facing veteran Major League pitchers.
