The Chicago Bears are a month away from free agency. The Bears are expected to explore options to land a few solid players on the offensive and defensive lines.
With more than $60 million in cap space to spend and potential cap cuts available, general manager Ryan Poles should be able to outbid for some of the best linemen on the market to attack opposing quarterbacks or keep Caleb Williams safe.
Trey Smith is the top option for the Chicago Bears
In his “Best team fits for top 50 players,” ESPN’s Matt Bowen thinks offensive guard Trey Smith would be the best fit for Chicago. Bowen has Smith ranked as the No. 2 player in all of free agency in 2025.
“The top interior lineman on the market, Smith would upgrade a critical position of need in Chicago,” Bowen wrote. “Smith is a powerful mover in the run game, as his run block win rate of 75.1% ranked sixth among guards. Plus, he has the foot speed to mirror interior defenders and the strength at 6-6 and 321 pounds to anchor against bull rushes.
“Bears general manager Ryan Poles could make a splash move to rebuild the front for Ben Johnson’s new offense. The Bears allowed a league-high 68 sacks in 2024, so this area has to be addressed.”
Smith will not be cheap
The six-foot-six, 321-pound athlete out of Humboldt, Tennessee, earned his first Pro Bowl appearances for 2024. At 25, he’s been a part of two Super Bowl wins. He’s started in all 67 games he’s appeared in.
Smith was a two-time All-SEC offensive lineman at Tennessee.
Smith would be the best option for the Bears in free agency. but it would be a costly signing. He’s expected to be paid north of $21 million per year.
