It didn’t take long for prospect Nico Hoerner to make an impact with the Chicago Cubs.
After being called up on Monday to join the Cubs roster in San Diego, the shortstop got in on the action early. Starting at shortstop and batting sixth in the lineup, Hoerner collected his first Major League hit in his first career at-bat with the Cubs.

With an injury to Javier Baez that will sideline him for the rest of the regular season as well as Addison Russell missing time after getting hit in the face, the Cubs will turn to Hoerner to help hold down the shortstop position in these final 20 games.
The former first-round pick in 2018 skipped Triple-A and was called up straight from Double-A Tennessee. He becomes the first player drafted in the 2018 class to reach the majors.
Chicago is beginning a big three-game road series vs. San Diego on Monday night, opening play 4.5 games back of St. Louis in the NL Central and holds the second Wild Card spot.
