Justin Fields reportedly changed some throwing mechanics this offseason and a new video by the Chicago Bears shows that
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields is looking to take a major leap in his second season under center. The second-year quarterback has said he’s feeling more comfortable this year. Fields struggled last season with his throwing motion looking slow at times. That’s common for many quarterbacks getting used to NFL speed.
Video from OTA practices this week was shown on the team’s YouTube page and it shows Fields getting the ball out faster. Analyst Nate Tice of The Athletic noticed it and broke down what he saw from Fields’ and his mechanics below:
it’s two (2) throws from drills but Fields does look to have shortened up his lead foot when throwing. It’s quickened everything up a bit.
Have to wait to see what it looks like with a pass rush and real team reps but it’s encouraging! https://t.co/XOEPYg2qyg

ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky also noticed it and offered up his take on what he’s seeing from Fields as the quarterback goes into year two.
Looks really smooth at the top. Feet tied to the upper body-drop of the ball is way less than a year ago. Cleaner=quicker https://t.co/6O9fAl8zVP

In the two throws, Fields works on keeping his base and feet in the correct position before firing to a black and white target on the quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko’s command. Fields missed the second target but banked it in on the roll down the net.
A more smooth, clean release would be an improvement this year. And the way analysts are excited about the new release should have Bears fans excited for the future. Fields is learning his second offense in as many seasons with the Bears. If he can improve his technique, accuracy, and limit turnovers, Fields can set himself up to have a stellar sophomore campaign.
