Welcome to the big leagues Willson Contreras.
The Chicago Cubs prospect had his first at bat of his career Sunday night at Wrigley Field and he took full advantage of it. Contreras launched a two-run home run in the sixth inning to help extend the Cubs lead to 6-1 over the Pittsburgh Pirates:
Contreras hit the first pitch he saw in the at-bat and was fired up rounding the bases. He then came out for a curtain call in front of a packed Wrigley Field.
Now that Contreras has his first major league at-bat, hit, RBI and home run out of the way, his first start will be next. Manager Joe Maddon hinted that Contreras would start either Sunday or Monday. On Monday, the Cubs will open a three-game series against the Cardinals with John Lackey on the mound.
Here’s what Maddon said via MLB.com:
“I don’t know that a young catcher will carry the same amount of cache out to the mound that a veteran can, but I do know Willson would go out there with some conviction,”
