If the Chicago White Sox are going to make any kind of a postseason push throughout the second half of the season, the bullpen is going to have to make some major adjustments.
The White Sox put some effort into the situation Friday by making a minor league deal with Ryan Webb.
Throughout 17 1/3 innings with the Rays organization, Webb had accumulated an ERA of 5.19 before being let go. He has built a name for himself as a sturdy pitcher but is nowhere near the dominant reliever that is going to answer all the problems for the South Siders.
During his time with the Rays this summer, we walked 3 batters while sending 11 back to the dugout on strikes.
Webb has a habit of generating grounders on almost half of the balls which are put in play against him. He has also given up a batting average of .417 to opposing lineups.
While he probably won’t be taking the hill anytime soon in Chicago, he does add depth to the area where the team has been struggling the most.
The White Sox have a solid group of relievers when they are healthy.
The starting rotation seems to be gaining momentum with the dominance of Chris Sale and James Shields finally starting to come to life.
Jose Quintana might just be the most underrated pitcher in the majors after being snubbed from an All-star selection. The lefty is currently 4th in the American League when it comes to innings pitched and his ERA is 8th so far this season.
The minor league deal with Webb does not take away any stress, no one is feeling a sense of ease, and the deal defiantly isn’t a cause for celebration. It does, however, show that the Sox are taking notice and at least trying to put themselves in a position to have a chance.
