Chicago White Sox rookie first baseman Jose Abreu was announced the winner of the Rookie of the Year Award for 2014. Abreu coming off one of the most impressive hitting starts in years.
Abreu was reportedly the winner of the award by unanimous decision according to ESPN, FOXSports and BleacherReport.
The news was first broken by the Fox sports MLB twitter account tweeting: ‘It’s unanimous! The 2014 @officialBBWAA AL Rookie of the Year: @79JoseAbreu! Congrats, Jose!’
The 27-year old was the first international player to be given a huge contract by a MLB team when the White Sox signed him to a five-year $68 million contract.
Abreu is the first White Sox to win the award since Ozzie Guillen in 1985.
Abreu finished his rookie season with a .317 BA (Batting average) and 36 home runs with 107 RBIs, he also had a slugging percentage of .581.
According to ESPNChicago, Jose Abreu is the fourth rookie to hit at least .300 with 30 HRs and 100 RBIs since the Rookie of the Year Award was first given out in 1947. The others being:
