After last nights loss were the Cubs Allstar Travis Wood got beat up by this Dbacks lineup, the team was hoping that they could rely on Samardzija to give them a quality outing. Also the team was hoping the reinsertion of David Dejesus back into the lineup would give them some extra confidence. Arizona would send out Ian Kennedy to the mound.
The Cubs got the scoring started in the top of the fourth as both pitchers appeared to be settled in. Dejesus lead of then with double and then was sacrificed to third by Junior Lake which then brought up Anthony Rizzo. Rizzo preceded to double to deep center as Dejesus scored to make it 1-0 Cubs. Nat Schierholtz then singled in Rizzo to make it 2-0 Cubs.
The Cubs would pick up right were they started in the top of the fifth. After two quick outs David Dejesus reached on an error by Second baseman Martin Prado, and that started the Cubs four run rally. Junior Lake then doubled to center and scored Dejesus from first to make it 3-0 Cubs. After Rizzo drew a walk Nate Schierholtz hit a three run jimmy jack to give the Cubs an apparently comfortable 6-0 lead.
However. the Dbacks would get two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a rare error by gold glove second baseman Darwin Barney. The lead was cut to 4 6-2 Cubs.In the bottom of the sixth the Dbacks had two runners on for Paul Goldschmidt who then hit a three run jimmy jack of his own to cut the lead to one. 6-5 Cubs.
The game would not have anymore runs scored until the bottom of the ninth. The Cubs sent out closer Kevin Gregg to save the game, but he allowed the first two batters to reach and now there were runners on the corners with no one out. Gregg got the first out when Martin Prado flew out to right. Next up was pinch hitter Cody Ross who delivered for the Dback hitting a sac fly to left to score Goldschmidt and sen the game into Extras.
In extras no one would score until the top half of the twelfth. Just like in the fifth the Cubs started the inning with two outs , but Rizzo drew another clutch walk to bring up Nate Schierholtz. Schierholtz delivered on the clutch as he crushed a double into left field scoring Rizzo all the way from first to give the Cubs a 7-6 lead.
Hector Rondon then pitched a 1-2-3 twelfth securing the Victory. The Cubs will go for the series victory tonight at 8:40 central time. the Cubs will run Carlos Villenueva(2-6, 4.16 ERA) out to the bump and the Dbacks will send out Wade Miley (6-8, 4.03 ERA)
