According to Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com, several teams a taking a ‘hard look’ at closer Carlos Marmol, including the Detroit Tigers.
Levine reported before spring training that Marmol will be traded before opening day. Now he reports the same news.
The Tigers went into spring training with Bruce Rondon as their closer, but with a weak spring, the Tigers are losing confidence in him. Making the Tigers in the market for a closer.
The Chicago Cubs would eat majority of the 9.8 million left on Marmol’s contract for young pitching. One name that keeps standing out is Rick Porcello; however, the Cubs have not been scouting Porcello this spring. So, who knows if the Cubs still have interest in Porcello.
Another team I can see in Marmol once again is the Los Angeles Angels. Their closer Ryan Madson can’t seem to stay healthy right now with an arm injury.
Not so fast … Gordon Wittenymer of the Chicago Sun-Times says there’s nothing to the reports of trade interest in Marmol, especially with the Tigers. Cubs don’t expect to move him ’till after the season starts. Probably a trade deadline move.
Even with Wittenmyer’s report, I still have a hunch Marmol will be traded by April 1st. If Marmol is traded, Kyuji Fujikawa will become the closer.
