The Chicago Bulls are currently rebuilding after trading away Jimmy Butler and landing three talented young players in Lauri Markkanen, Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn.
Chicago should be in position to grab another young, talented player in the 2018 NBA Draft due to being in the NBA Lottery. They could even fall into one of those top three spots and grab a top talent like DeAndre Ayton, Marvin Bagley or Michael Porter Jr.
But eventually the Bulls are going to have to land a star player via Free Agency or a trade. Could that star player be Anthony Davis?
The New Orleans Pelicans and Chicago Bulls made a deal on Thursday that sent Niko Mirotic and a firs round pick in exchange for Omer Asik, Tony Allen, Jameer Nelson and a first round pick. The Pelicans are in a weird situation as they just lost Boogie Cousins for the year but are still in the playoff race.
There’s a thought that the Pelicans could go into full rebuild mode which would mean possibly trading off both Anthony Davis and Cousins. If that happened, there would be high interest for both players.
But already, Davis’ name is popping up in rumors.
According to Sean Deveney, teams are very interested in trading for Davis if he becomes available. Deveney notes that this trade deadline will be big in terms of teams trying to re-tool their roster for a potential Davis trade in the Summer. He mentions the Bulls as one of those teams:
A new front office, however, could be more open to a complete rebuild in New Orleans, which has a hefty contract belonging to Jrue Holiday ($26 million next season), as well as $32 million committed next season to the troika of Solomon Hill, Omer Asik and E’Twaun Moore. There’s some logic to shedding deals where possible and starting over, even if it means parting with a mega-star like Davis.
At least, that’s the view from other front offices. Several teams — Boston, most prominently, but also Golden State, San Antonio and Chicago — will go into this trade deadline not only with their own rosters in mind, but with some consideration for the potential of a Davis trade this summer.
Now a full rebuild for the Pelicans doesn’t mean they would move Davis. They could decide to keep the 24-year-old star player and try to build around him once again.
Either way, Chicago’s name being mentioned is a good thing. The Bulls would love to pair a star like Davis with Lauri Markkanen who has been one of the more impressive rookies this season.
Then adding a top 5 player in the 2018 NBA Draft would speed up the Bulls’ rebuilding process.
