Willson Contreras is just full of confidence.
The catcher is entering his third season in MLB and is coming off a solid 2017 campaign in which he established himself as one of the top players at his position in the National League. But Contreras isn’t settling for just being one of the top players.
Instead, he wants to be the best.
At the annual Cubs Convention over the weekend, Contreras talked about how he would study NL catchers Yadier Molina and Buster Posey. The two are considered among the best at their position in the game and that’s where Contreras wants to be.
He offered up this quote via Steve Greenberg of the Chicago Sun-Times and it should pump up Cubs fans:
“I used to watch a lot of those guys, but now I’m watching myself because I know that I’m going to be better than them. That’s my plan. That’s my [mindset]. In my mind, I want to be the best catcher in the game for a long time — like it was with Yadier Molina, like it is with Buster Posey.”
The 25-year-old is slashing .278/.356/.494 since he made his debut back in June 2016. He broke out in 2017, hitting 21 home runs, driving in 74 RBI and batting .276.
Contreras has become a key part in the Cubs lineup and projects to be there for years to come.
