ROSEMONT- The Wolves improved to 11-4-3-0 (5-0-2-0 at home) with 25 points thanks to a 3-2 victory over the Iowa Wild on Saturday night. The Wolves have broken their two-game losing streak and they still have yet to lose in regulation at the Allstate Arena.
The Summary
After allowing two power play goals in the first period, courtesy of Wild center Zach Phillips and defenseman Jonathon Blum, the Wolves strung another three goals while their defense got their act together. Wolves winger Benn Ferriero (first goal of the season) scored late in the first period, while center Ty Rattie (11th) found the back of the net in the second, then forward Philip McRae (fifth) put the icing on the cake in the third.
The Big Moment
Wolves goaltender Jordan Binnington (26 saves, two goals against) stopped 14 Iowa shots over the final two periods to push his team to victory. The Wolves defense shined in the third period by limiting the Wild to just five shots in the final frame.
Stats Of The Night
The Wolves were 0-for-4 on the power play, 0-for-2 on the penalty kill, and missed 11 of their 12 third period shot attempts. Half of which were short-handed opportunities right in front of the Iowa net.
The Quote
Wolves head coach John Anderson, “Our starts have not been good as of late, I know a couple of reasons why, and hopefully we can fix it…. There’s no rest for the weary.”
Conclusion
There definitely won’t be any rest as the Wolves will take the ice again on Sunday afternoon. The first place (13-4-0-1, 27 points) arch-rival Rockford Ice Hogs come to Rosemont for a crucial Midwest Division matchup. The Hogs have won three in-a-row, and they already own a victory (4-3 back on October 25th) over the Wolves this season.
This will be the second meeting between these two teams, and the Wolves need a victory in order to gain ground in the division. The puck will drop at 4pm, follow me on Twitter @GabeSalgado82
