According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the New Yankees have called the Cubs to see what it will take to land pitcher Matt Garza. Sherman adds that a Cubs source says it’s “very, very unlikely”. However, if the Yanks were to offer a package of top prospects, the Cubs will listen and a trade could be worked on (unconfirmed). Manly players the Cubs could target are Montero, Romine, Banuelos, and Betances. I have to admit if the Cubs were to be offered a package of 2 of those players, it would be really tempting. It was not said on who the Yanks will offer.
We heard that the Blue Jays have checked on the availability of Matt Garza and said the asking price was out of the world. The Jays don’t have the pieces that it will take to land Garza like the Yanks. I think the Cubs are looking for more major league ready players in a trade. More teams have express interest in Garza, but manly the Yanks and Jays were the teams mentioned.
The Cubs traded top prospects last Winter under former GM Jim Hendry for Garza and that’s why the asking price is outrageous. The Cubs traded P Chris Archer, OF Brandon Guyer, SS Hak-Ju Lee, C Robinson Chirinos and OF Sam Fuld for Matt Garza. The Rays also sent over OF Fernando Perez and P Zack Rosscup. The only player that was promising in the trade for the Cubs was the player of the trade – Matt Garza.
Matt Garza was the best pitcher for the Cubs in 2011 by far and looked very good. He’s the Cubs ace and looks like a promising #1 starter. If the Cubs were to trade Garza, that would tell the fans that they are in a re-building phase and don’t plan on competing in 2012 or longer. Matt Garza is still arbitration eligible and this Winter will be his 2nd time.
However, I don’t see the Cubs trading Matt Garza because they won’t get enough in return, he’s still young, on the cheaper side and their not going through a full rebuild mode. But I expect to keep hearing the rumors now and the whole time at the Winter Meetings. With more teams being mentioned who are interested in Garza. Also, the Cubs will listen on Garza because Theo Epstein said no one is untouchable and they’ll listen on everybody.
So…we’ll have to see what happens on the Matt Garza front.
