Chicago White Sox prospect Yoan Moncada has been tearing the cover off the ball in Triple-A Charlotte to start the 2017 season.
But could we see him up with the White Sox soon?
Moncada is hitting .340/.413/.536 for the Knights this season, including 5 home runs through 24 games. He was named the White Sox Minor League Player of the Month award for April.
On Thursday, Moncada was on a conference call with White Sox reporters and discussed his future with the team.
The second baseman says he feels like he’s ready to be called up but is not focusing just on that but rather his play.
Here’s the exact quote via The Athletic’s James Fegan:
“I feel ready and I’m just waiting for that call,” Moncada said through an interpreter. “My focus right now is just to play and do my job in Charlotte because that’s something I can control. They’re going to make that call whenever they think it’s the right time.”
This is a rebuilding year for the White Sox but so far they are off to a hot start. Their 15-12 record has them in a tie with the Cleveland Indians for first place in the AL Central and if they keep up the start, they could lean towards buying at the trade deadline.
Moncada had 20 plate appearances in September of 2016 for the Red Sox but stuck out 12 times.
Adding Moncada to this lineup would be a plus and give the White Sox the chance to see how their young star responds at the major league level.
