The Chicago White Sox landed prospect Yoan Moncada as part of a deal that sent ace Chris Sale to the Boston Red Sox back in December of 2016.
With the team rebuilding, acquiring young assets to build around was a key for Rick Hahn. One of those pieces is Moncada.
The 22-year-old Moncada is playing well for Triple-A Charlotte hitting .282/.380/.455 with 11 home runs and 32 RBI in 277 at-bats. He entered the season as the prized prospect in the White Sox farm system and the top prospect in all of baseball.
Baseball Prospectus released its midseason top prospects list and just like at the beginning of the season, Moncada sits at the top.
Here’s what Baseball Prospectus said about Moncada:
Moncada is a true five-tool player, with potential plus or better grades in all five slots. Slot that in at an up-the-middle-spot, throw in a dash of 70-grade pop, and you have the recipe for a perennial all-star.
The White Sox have loaded up on prospects in hopes of building a World Series contender in the next few seasons.
With the team struggling in 2017, we could see Moncada called up late in the season to give him another taste of the big leagues.
The team will likely trade away some players at the deadline in hopes of bringing in more prospects to build around. Even if they do, it’s hard to imagine them receiving a player better than Moncada in any deal.
The country will get to see Moncada’s skills on showcase when he plays in the 2017 MLB Futures Game in Miami on Sunday, July 9.
White Sox teammates Zach Collins and Michael Kopech will also play in the game.
