Well it took 87 games but the White Sox have finally done it. With the Sox win on Sunday afternoon the White Sox moved a half game ahead of the Tigers giving the Sox there first out right lead in first place season. And this is how it was done.
Young Daniel Hudson took the bump for the Sox today, it was his first appearance of the year. Things didn’t start out so well for Hudson as in the 2nd inning Aviles hit a sac fly that would score Billy Butler. In the bottom half of the inning Andruw Jones would hit a sac fly of his own to tie the ball game. In the 3rd innings Gordon Beckham reached first on the single to start the inning but was doubled off on an excellent play by Betancourt, but that was only the beginning of the fun. Alex Rios made it a 2-1 game on a 417 foot home run to centerfield. That was followed by a Carlos Quentin blast to make it 3-1 Sox. After AJ and Kotsay reached base it was Andruw Jones who belted his 400th career home run to make it 7-1 Sox. It was then young slugger Dayan “Tank” Viciedo who blasted his 2nd run home run of the season capping off a 7 run inning. A home run by Jose Guillen and RBI singles by Podsednik and Kendall would end the day for Daniel Hudson, but the Sox still had the 8-5 lead. The Sox got right back to work in the 6th when Omar Vizquel knocked in Dayan Viciedo with a sac fly. Carlos Quentin belted his 2nd home run of the game, this one of the grand slam variety giving the Sox a 13-5 lead. RBI doubles by Gordon Beckham and Brent Lillinbridge would give the Sox a 15-5 lead and that is how the game would end.
Daniel Hudson was a little rusty in his first start of the season. Hudson went 4 innings allowing 5 runs on 6 hits. It was Tony Pena to the rescue once again, Tony went 3 inninsg allowing 3 hits and no runs. Linebrink and Jenks would finish off the game for the Sox.
The Sox enter the all-star break with a half game lead over the Tigers for First Place.
Remember to watch Sox all-stars Matt Thornton and Paul Konerko this week.
